What Does ghd Stand For? The Story of the Iconic Hair Brand + the New Cashmere Collection

Hey lovelies! Today I want to tell you a story about a brand that has been in my life (and my styling section!) for as long as I can remember… ghd. 💕

When we were growing up in the UK, ghd wasn’t just a brand – it was the brand. If you had a ghd, you were winning at life! So when a client recently told me she’d never heard of it, I nearly fell off my chair. And I realised… Cyprus is about to discover something BIG!

So… What Does ghd Stand For?

Let’s start with the basics, because so many people don’t know this one:

ghd stands for “Good Hair Day.”

And honestly? Could there be a better name for a hair brand? That’s literally what every single one of us wants when we wake up in the morning! 😂

The Story Behind ghd

This is the bit I love. ghd wasn’t created by a giant corporation in a boardroom – it started with hairdressers.

✂️ 2001, Leeds, UK: ghd was founded by Martin Penny, Gary Douglas and Robert Powls.
🇰🇷 A discovery in Korea: on a trip to South Korea, they came across a flat iron that could create poker-straight hair in seconds. They bought the rights to it and brought it back to the UK – and the ghd styler was born.
🗣️ Word of mouth, not adverts: ghd grew through salons and hairdressers recommending it to their clients. Its first big advertising campaign didn’t come until around two years after launch – by then, salons were already queuing up for stock!
🌍 Going global: by 2013, more than two million styling irons had been sold through around 50,000 salons worldwide. Today ghd is still headquartered in Leeds.

People literally started saying “I’ve ghd’d my hair” – when your brand becomes a verb, you know you’ve made it!

Fun fact from me: years ago I even tried to get the ghd licence for Cyprus myself! (You can read about that in my old post Let’s Talk Straight!) So you can imagine how excited I am to finally have ghd on HairCare Cyprus. 🥰

Why ghd Became the Industry Leader

1. It’s all about the magic number: 185°C

ghd’s scientists found that 185°C is the optimum styling temperature – hot enough to create long-lasting styles quickly, but without the excessive heat that causes unnecessary damage. Too hot and you’re frying your hair; too cool and your style just drops. Their stylers are designed to hold that temperature consistently, which is why they don’t “cook” the hair like old-school irons. (Always use heat protection though, girls!)
