Find the right brush for the job

Round thermal brushes — for blow-drying with volume, movement and shine. The barrel heats from your dryer and shapes the hair as it dries.

Detangling brushes — flexible bristles that work through knots on wet or dry hair with far less pulling and breakage.

Paddle and cushion brushes — for smoothing long hair and daily brushing.

Vented brushes — airflow through the body for faster rough-drying.

Choosing a round brush size
Barrel size is the single most useful thing to get right:

15–25mm — short hair, fringes and tight curl

35–45mm — short to mid-length hair

55mm — medium to long hair
-
65–80mm — long or thick hair, and big smooth blow-outs
As a rule: smaller barrels create more curl and lift, larger barrels create smoother, straighter movement.
Bristles, and what they actually do

Nylon — grip and tension. Best for getting control during a blow-dry.

Boar bristle — distributes the scalp's natural oils down the hair for shine and smoothness. Note that boar bristle is animal-derived, so those brushes are not vegan.

Mixed boar and nylon — grip plus polish, the usual professional choice.

Flexible plastic teeth — detangling with minimal breakage.

Looking after your brushes
Remove loose hair after every use and wash occasionally in lukewarm water, drying bristles down. A clean brush works better and lasts years longer. Remember that metal and ceramic barrels get genuinely hot under a dryer — hold by the handle and take care near the scalp and ears.
