Why Hair Has Always Been a Symbol of Beauty, Power & Confidence

Hair Through the Centuries: Why Your Hair Has Always Been Your Crown

Throughout history, hair has been far more than a simple physical feature. Across cultures and centuries it has symbolised beauty, strength, wealth, power, identity and personal expression. Long before modern haircare products or viral TikTok tutorials existed, societies understood something deeply human: hair carries meaning. From mythological goddesses to biblical heroes and powerful queens, hair has always been tied to status, confidence, and identity.

Today I still believe the same thing I’ve told thousands of my clients over the past 20 years: Your hair is your crown. And how you care for it affects not only how you look — but how you feel.

The Power of Hair in History
Samson – Strength in His Hair. One of the most famous stories linking hair and power comes from the biblical figure Samson. Samson’s extraordinary strength was said to reside in his hair. As long as his hair remained uncut, his strength remained intact. When it was cut, he lost his power. While symbolic, the story reflects something deeply rooted in human psychology: hair represents vitality, identity and strength.

Lady Godiva – Hair as Beauty and Modesty

The legendary story of Lady Godiva tells of a noblewoman who rode naked through the streets of Coventry to protest heavy taxation on her people. In nearly every depiction, she is shown covered only by her long flowing hair. Her hair represented femininity, beauty and dignity, even in vulnerability. It protected her modesty while emphasising her grace.

Hair was not just decoration — it was part of her identity and presence. Queen Elizabeth I – Hair as Power and Image

Hair has also been used as a tool of political power and image control. After suffering illness that caused significant hair loss, Queen Elizabeth I famously wore elaborate wigs. These wigs became part of her royal identity. The towering red wigs we associate with her were not simply fashion — they were symbols of authority and monarchy. Her hair was so integral to her image that it helped support the weight and placement of her crown.

Even centuries ago, leaders understood something modern branding experts now repeat constantly:

Image matters. Aphrodite – Hair as Natural Beauty. Even in ancient mythology, hair was considered a defining feature of beauty.

Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, was often depicted nude — yet her flowing hair was always emphasised. Her hair symbolised natural femininity, sensuality and divine beauty. Interestingly, here in Cyprus — the island traditionally associated with Aphrodite — beauty and hair rituals have been celebrated for thousands of years. Hair has always been part of how we present ourselves to the world.

Your Hair Is Still Your Crown. Over the centuries styles have changed, but one thing has not: Hair still plays a major role in confidence, identity and personal image. Whether you realise it or not, your hair communicates something about you every day. It’s part of your personal brand.

And when your hair looks and feels healthy, it naturally elevates how you carry yourself.

But here’s the reality: Hair is a science.

It has layers, complexities and nuances that simply cannot be explained in a 30-second video. Hair care is highly personalised. What works for one person may completely fail for another.

Your hair routine depends on many factors:

Hair type and density- Texture and porosity- Previous colour or bleaching- Keratin or chemical treatments- Hair extensions- Daily styling habits- Scalp health- Hormonal influences- Internal health factors

Hair loss, for example, can be linked to hormones, nutrient deficiencies, stress, or follicle damage. In these cases, a blood test is often necessary to properly understand the root cause.

This is why so many people come to me feeling confused, exhausted and overwhelmed. They’ve tried everything they’ve seen online — but nothing works. Experience Matters. I’ve spent over 20 years working as a professional hairdresser, helping clients navigate every type of hair challenge imaginable. But beyond the years in the salon, my work is grounded in education and ongoing research.

There is also an important distinction within the industry that many people don’t realise.

Not all hairdressers have the same level of training.

A Level 2 hairdresser is trained in the application of colour and cutting techniques.

A Level 3 hairdresser is trained in corrective hair science — understanding how to repair, analyse and resolve hair problems.

Corrective work requires deeper technical knowledge of:

Hair structure- Chemical interactions- Damage repair- Scalp conditions- Hair loss causes

This is where real expertise comes in.

The Truth: Most People Only Need 3 Products. One of the biggest myths in haircare is that you need dozens of products. In reality, most people only need three key products for healthy hair.

1. The Right Shampoo (cleansing, deep cleaning, detox, maintaining scalp/follicle health with every wash)

A shampoo suited to your scalp and hair type keeps the scalp healthy and allows hair to grow well. It should cleanse effectively without disrupting the scalp environment.

2. A Conditioner/ Mask

A nourishing treatment helps repair damage, smooth the cuticle and restore moisture. This is essential for maintaining strength, shine and elasticity.

3. A Multi-Benefit Leave-In Treatment/ Oil/ Serum/Cream

Modern leave-in treatments can provide multiple benefits such as:

Heat protection

UV protection

Split-end prevention

Daily moisture

Detangling

Smoothness

This step protects the hair from everyday stress. Everything else — sprays, mousses, styling creams — is simply a styling bonus. But those three products form the essential toolkit for beautiful hair.

My Philosophy: Hair care should not feel like a complicated protocol. It should fit effortlessly into your lifestyle.

My goal when helping clients is always the same: To create a routine that works with your daily life so your hair naturally looks beautiful every day. Because when your hair feels good… you feel good.
